PP4-MTYU-WA- Meekatharra Environmental Community
This activity will involve participants working at the Meekatharra District High School Community Farm. The farm area is a sizeable piece of land which has been neglected and become quite run down. There are shade houses and other buildings. The school would like to regenerate this space and use it to benefit both the school and the community. There is a small orchard that requires reticulating, mulching and paths constructed. The school principle wants to create a community garden where children from the school and community volunteers could grow produce and raise poultry. The school currently provides students with breakfast each day but with vegetables and eggs grown in the garden; this produce could be used to produce healthy lunches for students. Surplus vegetables could be distributed to those community members in need.
There is also one large low lying paddock at the farm that is salt affected. The NGJC team would investigate what native plant species are tolerant to salt and would assist in addressing the salinity problem with revegetation.
Participants will research and source suitable growing mediums and raise plants from seed and other forms of propagation, this would include both vegetables and native plants. The plants will be nurtured and once they are of size, will be replanted back into the areas requiring revegetation or into the community garden. At various points throughout the activity more seeds will be planted, so a continuous rotation of plants will become available for future use.
A bush tucker garden is planned for later in the site’s development.
Aims
• Re-establish a community and school farm facility to benefit the predominantly indigenous population of Meekatharra. This will assist in educating both the community and school children about healthy eating.
• Arrest salinity in community farm lower paddock.
• Revegetate bushland areas.

PP4-MTYU-WA- Carnarvon Greening and Environmental Care
This activity with establish a team of young job seekers in Carnarvon who will participate in work experience benefiting the local environment and promoting responsible land management. Participants will undertake a Cert II in Conservation and Land Management at Durack Institute of Technology. The project will focus on eradicating environmental weeds along the Gascoyne river within the confines of the Carnarvon town site and replanting the area with native plants featuring a high salt tolerance. This will stabilise the riverbank and prevent future erosion.
Participants will also undertake work in the Shire nursery to propagate and raise a variety of native species that will provide a continuous source of plants to revegetate identified areas of concern and offset carbon emissions.
1. Eradicating weeds and introduced species:
• Identifying Weeds of National Significance (WoNS)
• Identifying other introduced species
• Map areas of weed infestation
• Plan and prioritise on-ground-works
• Remove weeds manually and in some areas, chemically
• Replant treated areas
2. Propagating and raising plants from seeds:
• Preparing soil mixes
• Prepare seed for planting
• Plant seeds
• Install reticulation
• Pot out seedlings
