PP4-MTYU-QLD- Springbrook “Towards Sustainability 2” Project - Second Phase
This project will be a continuation of the Springbrook Landcare’s “Towards Sustainability” program. There are two primary goals for this project to achieve:
1. Water Quality
To assist SEQ Waters plans to maintain the quality of the watershed. Water collected in the Springbrook region catchment runs directly into the Little Nerang Hinze Dams.
2. Wildlife Corridors
The project will continue to extend the wildlife corridor at the top of Springbrook Mountain connecting the Springbrook and Lamington National Parks. These parks were cut off from each other decades ago by cattle and dairy farmers.
To achieve these goals the team will be involved in the following work experience activities:
• Plant local native plant species (over 7,000 plants)
• Undertake strategic erosion control
• Re-align and restore fences protecting riparian vegetation
• Undertake maintenance at a number of rock wall creek crossings
• Remove and control exotic weeds (over 4ha)
• Seed collecting and propagation
• Fence re-aligning and restoration
The very high involvement and contribution by local landholders to the previous NGJC project has resulted in higher than expected on ground outcomes achieved. Linda Durham has met with all local stakeholders and JFSEQ representatives and confirms the continued support of GCCC, QPWS, Landcare and other local community interest groups.
Background to the Project
Surrounded by National Parks and reserves, Springbrook is situated 900 metres above sea level on the McPherson Range amongst the headwaters of the creeks flowing to the Gold Coast Little Nerang and Hinze Dams, primary sources of the Gold Coast’s drinking water. On the lower part of the Springbrook Plateau is the renowned Purling Brook falls.
In 1998 Springbrook Landcare was formed with many successful projects completed since that time. More recently the group, together with the local community, landholders and other key stakeholders have worked to build a sustainable future for the area by protecting land, vegetation and the waterways for future generations. This has been known as the Springbrook Landcare’s “Towards Sustainability” program.
Almost three years ago SEQ Catchments was engaged by Springbrook Landcare to deliver a Property Management Planning workshop to 18 landholders, in a process designed to improve property management and subsequently assist them to develop plans to better manage their properties.
SEQ Catchments Gold Coast Community Partnerships Manager, Linda Durham said: “An equally important aim of the program was to ensure landowners were provided with the latest scientific knowledge and training to update their skills if and when required throughout the program.
Springbrook Landcare President, Graham Hardy, said: “ The successful vegetation and riparian protection projects on local farming land has been achieved through the hard work of Landcare members and participating landowners who have volunteered their time over and above their normal busy schedules”.[SEQ Catchments ' News from SEQ Catchments and Springbrook Landcare, Public Notice 2nd Nov 2010]

PP4-MTYU-QLD- Townsville Sustainability Project I
For this Townsville NGJC project we are planning to move into Phase 2 development at the Community Garden. The project site is adjacent to the Ross River and will demonstrate a range of best practice methods of water use including reducing off site water runoff and prevention of pollution of local waterways.
This project will create a "sustainability" demonstration area and will provide to community an opportunity to learn about sustainable land management. Key elements of this Phase 2 Sustainability project will be to:
install drainage and water wise irrigation, reduce off site pollution into the Oonoonba Flats by installing a silt capture system and raising all garden beds well above ground, building and installing fences, expanding the orchard and planting a shelter belt. The project will also install paths, retaining walls and rebuild all existing garden beds using sustainable materials. To ensure inclusion of as many community members as possible, this project will build a wheelchair accessible shelter. Using mostly recycled materials, the team will also construct and install seating and picnic tables.
One section of the garden is going to have high/raised beds for wheel chair accessibility with a wheelchair friendly path to the garden area. Documentation of the project will be another "IT" part of the project (e.g. using digital cameras, installing photos, doing a newsletter, undertaking research etc).
The second component of the project will be expanding the community propagation nursery, building permanent shelves and upgrading the potting shed. The nursery will continue to grow native seedlings for community Landcare projects, but will also be expanded to include propagation of open pollinated, organically grown vegetable seedlings. They will be used at this community garden as well as donated to other community organizations that have small vegetable plots and gardens.
All project construction activities will be done using as many recycled building materials as possible. The team will be assisted to source these materials as part of the sustainability theme of the project.
Thirdly, the team will revisit all past and existing NGJC project sites to do replacement tree planting, mulching and weed control where necessary.
Project activities:
• Community garden construction work
• Community nursery construction and propagation of natives and vegetables
• Conservation works in natural areas
• Certificate II in Construction Pathways
• First Aid and OHS

PP4-MTYU-QLD- Ayr Green Skills Project
Being the last NGJC project for the Ayr region, this team will complete conservation works at previous and current Landcare project locations. The team will undertake infill plantings, control environmental weeds and extend further revegetation at these sites. In addition, the team will extend the local community garden and community nursery including upgrading the chicken and pig facilities at the community garden site.
Partnering with Burdekin Shire Council, another focus of this National Green Jobs Corps project will be the upgrade to the Lion’s Diorama Museum (on the Homehill side of the Burdekin Bridge). The Diorama was built by the local Lions Club as a tribute to the region’s historical European pioneers. It traces the river and the sugar industry from its beginnings in the region. The Diorama has fallen into disrepair and was also damaged as a result of Cyclone Yasi. In addition to this damage, the area has also been vandalised. The team will upgrade this important local tourist attraction with painting and repairs, a complete garden refurbishment and general upgrade of surrounds so that once again it can be a stopping point for visitors to the area.
Aims
• To provide ongoing supply of native plant seedlings to local Landcare projects, particularly ground covers, shrubs and local native grasses.
• Extend the areas of revegetation at the old Burdekin Racecourse ' thereby extending the wildlife corridor along the upper stretch of Plantation Creek (tributary of the Burdekin River).
• Extend the community garden area and community participation opportunity to learn about sustainable land management (e.g. low water use garden establishment, recycling, composting, worm farming, companion planting etc).
• Improve community education and visitor information area at the Diorama site

PP4-MTYU-QLD- Gold Coast Community Project Federation Walk - Phase 4
The Friends of Federation Walk is a well supported and high profile local community group who are working towards better management of the last remaining substantial dune system on the Gold Coast mainland. A partnership approach has been developed between Gold Coast City Council, Griffith Centre for Coastal Management, Gecko, local business and the general community to ensure that this area remains one of the most beautiful sections of the Gold Coast. In July 2003, The Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Stephen Robertson MP ratified the gazettal of this area for Park, Environment, Beach Protection and Coastal Management purposes of long term protection of this reserve.
The Purpose of the project
This National Green Jobs Corps project proposal will continue with Phase 3 assistance to the Friends of Federation Walk to continue its successful dune revegetation and dune stabilisation. This will be achieved through a rigorous campaign of revegetation and weed control in association with various plant and fire protection regimes.
The Federation Walk Coastal reserve continues to attract significant and ongoing interest from other dune care and coastal management groups who are visiting the site to see firsthand “best practice” examples of coastal revegetation and dune protection methods. A number of newsletters and community tree planting events can be found on http://www.federationwalk.org/
Historically, the site has attracted a diversity of environmental enthusiasts and experienced revegetation practitioners. The activities described in this proposal will continue to capitalise on this expertise and the National Green Jobs Corps Project team will work with these technicians to:
• Continue to enhance the biological diversity and ecological functions of the site’s natural environment through revegetating the area with littoral rainforest species.
• Continue to preserve the diversity of coastal vegetation on the Gold Coast mainland.
• Directly increase the biodiversity of the flora at Federation Walk, and provide improved habitat for endemic faunal and bird species.
• Manage weed species on-site, targeting priority species and developing a co-ordinated program with other pest management agencies.
• Restore the site’s natural stability and resilience against disturbance and reduce impacts of coastal erosion through targeted revegetation of sites.
• Monitor recreational usage of reserve and provide well-maintained and safe track access to encourage appropriate usage of Reserve.
• Undertake seed collection for endemic coastal species propagation.

PP4-MTYU-WA- Meekatharra Environmental Community
This activity will involve participants working at the Meekatharra District High School Community Farm. The farm area is a sizeable piece of land which has been neglected and become quite run down. There are shade houses and other buildings. The school would like to regenerate this space and use it to benefit both the school and the community. There is a small orchard that requires reticulating, mulching and paths constructed. The school principle wants to create a community garden where children from the school and community volunteers could grow produce and raise poultry. The school currently provides students with breakfast each day but with vegetables and eggs grown in the garden; this produce could be used to produce healthy lunches for students. Surplus vegetables could be distributed to those community members in need.
There is also one large low lying paddock at the farm that is salt affected. The NGJC team would investigate what native plant species are tolerant to salt and would assist in addressing the salinity problem with revegetation.
Participants will research and source suitable growing mediums and raise plants from seed and other forms of propagation, this would include both vegetables and native plants. The plants will be nurtured and once they are of size, will be replanted back into the areas requiring revegetation or into the community garden. At various points throughout the activity more seeds will be planted, so a continuous rotation of plants will become available for future use.
A bush tucker garden is planned for later in the site’s development.
Aims
• Re-establish a community and school farm facility to benefit the predominantly indigenous population of Meekatharra. This will assist in educating both the community and school children about healthy eating.
• Arrest salinity in community farm lower paddock.
• Revegetate bushland areas.
