The project aims to provide accredited training and a broad range of skills to the team in searching, collating and presenting the historical stories of Burwood Heritage buildings.
The team will work in the Burwood area in a heritage rich environment, building community ties with the Burwood Historical Society to develop a public document showing the change (buildings) and diversity (community) in the local area since its original development.
ï´ Aim: Highlighting the importance of history and cultural heritage
Activities:
1. Properties will be photographed as they are today
2. Participants will research Council records, internet files and Burwood and Mitchell libraries to trace history of buildings
ï´ Aim: Providing the public with a well researched and clearly presented document that will aid the understanding of influences that made Burwood the way it is today.
Activities:
1. With the guidance of the supervisor, the participants will prepare a project plan including timeline for completion.
2. The participants will identify properties to be included in the study.
3. The data collected will be analysed.
4. The participants will develop a format for the report
ï´ Aim: To document the environmental impact on changes to original properties
Activities:
1. Where records are available, calculate the original size of the land on which the property is situated and compared to current block. This information will be used to calculate loss or gain of green space.
2. Record description of current garden to establish if drought tolerant and native plants are present.
3. Research Council records for approval to remove trees from properties.

This partnership has identified several areas for rehabilitation within urban and native environments. These include:
⢠Belling park
⢠Shaw street Gardens
⢠Ashmont Public School
⢠Riverina Environmental Education Centre
⢠Department of Housing sites
The main focus of this project will be educating both participants and the wider community in the use of organic gardening. Presently the Wagga Wagga Demonstration Gardens group operates and maintains a community based organic garden. Their knowledge and existing processes will be the basis for our project.
Participants will complete some initial training within the groupâs community garden, but will quickly take their aquired knowledge to the other identified projects within the community.
The city of Wagga Wagga is also identified as an area of significant cultural importance to the indigenous community. The group will look to link with local indigenous bodies and use their knowledge of native plants and land management to influence the practices of the group.
Demonstration Gardens have an existing relationship with Riverina TAFE allowing onsite delivery of units from the Certificate II in Rural Skills package. Participants will complete these available units amassing at minimum 150 hours of accredited training.
At the conclusion of the program Participants will have experienced both accredited and non-accredited training, genuine work experience interacting with the current work force, a solid understanding of environmental gardening and best practice for land management and expert job seeking assistance to help them find employment in this field.

PP2-MTYU-NSW- Berkeley - Hooka Point and Heritage Park Natural Restoration Project
At the completion of the project Hooka Point and Heritage Parks will have bush regeneration and maintenance throughout the park lands.
All of the above will be undertaken in partnership with the Lake Illawarra Authority (LIA). The intent of the Authority's activities has been to restore the ecological environment of the lake whilst recognising the importance that the community places on the lake as a vital regional recreational and tourist resource. Tourism is an emerging industry in the Illawarra hence the importance of continuing the restoration program
The regeneration of the areas will require the planting of plant species within the areas which have been cleared and affected by uncontrolled vehicle access.
The dominant species to be planted in this area is Casuarina glauca, this is due to it natural dominance in this area. Other species will be planted in proportion to their natural occurrence in this area. New plants are proposed to be planted within the Swap Oak Forest, Heritage Park and around Hooka Point.
The aim of the bush regeneration and maintenance is to Improve community access to the parklands through weed removal activities.
Plants will also be included in the seed bank that commenced in the previous project. Collection of seeds will be undertaken primarily at Heritage Park as there is an abundance of trees and shrubs that are identified above. Seed banks are increasingly being seen as an important conservation tool for maintaining the diversity of the Australian Flora. Large quantities of genetic material can be stored in a very small space in a seed bank. The purpose of the seed bank is to supply seed to the LIA to produce seedlings for planting around Lake Illawarra.

PP2-MTYU-QLD- Numinbah Valley Green Jobs Project Phase 2
The maintenance of riparian vegetation along the Nerang River is integral to preserving the water quality in the water reservoir to which it flows ' the Hinze Dam ' the water supply for the entire Gold Coast. The riparian strip also functions as an important wildlife habitat and corridor.
This project will improve water quality, restore wildlife habitat and improve biodiversity by rehabilitating riparian areas at numerous sites along the Upper Nerang River. The protection and enhancement of habitat in the Numinbah catchment upstream of the Hinze Dam is a key priority of the Gold Coast City Council’s nature conservation objectives, as is the preservation and protection of the Endangered - Giant Barred River Frog (Mixophyes iterates) and the Threatened - Richmond Birdwing Butterfly (Ornithoptera richmondia).
Removing weeds, increasing the riparian zone, community education, fencing and controlling access is essential for the protection of the Giant Barred Frog, and planting Pararistolochia vines will assist with population increases of the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly (Ornithoptera richmondia). The Birdwing was once common in South East Queensland and northern NSW but destruction of coastal rainforests has resulted in the butterfly's local extinction in more than two-thirds of its natural range.
The proposed sites within this project are highly visible and most are fully accessible to the local community. This will result in raised community awareness of these local environmental issues. Through involvement of the local Landcare group and dissemination of information to local landholders, the project also aims to foster similar environmental improvements on private land within the locality, as the benefits of weed eradication and revegetation strategies become more widely appreciated.
This project will raise community awareness and produce a range of educational brochures and interpretive information. The participants will spend time involving the community and promoting the Landcare activities to the local and wider community. These activities will be undertaken utilising JFSEQ training facilities at Southport. JFSEQ will be jointly hosting this project.
Aims
•Improving the biodiversity of the river through riparian cluster plantings, wetland plantings and installation of fauna boxes;
•Improving community access to the reserve through weed removal activities, walking track construction, installation of picnic tables and interpretive signage

PP2-MTYU-QLD- Cairns and Trinity Inlet River System Regeneration
The Cairns Environs Riparian Systems Rejuvenation Project aims to provide participants with experience, understanding and knowledge of the Riparian Ecosystems within the Cairns Environs region. Working with the project Host Trinity Inlet Catchment Management Authority whom is an umbrella organisation to Coastal Landcare and Cairns Urban Landcare. Project locations will vary from the South of Cairns to the North of Cairns providing a diverse range of local ecosystems. Locations such as Thomatis Creek, Skeleton Creek, Moon Creek, Cattana Wetlands and McKinnon Creek will give participants a variety of locations to gain new skills.
Skills gained from the project will include plant propagation techniques, seed collection, plant nursery duties, plant identification, weed eradication techniques, chemical handling, ability to identify Occupational Health and Safety risks, small machinery use and maintenance, revegetation skills, planting, mulching, pest management and other general horticultural or land management skills.
The aim of the project is to improve the quality of the riparian systems within the region to decrease the effects of erosion, river pollution and sediment run off into the local ecosystem and inlet. Through the revegetation process it will also assist in the development of wildlife corridors for local fauna and birdlife and assist in improving the biodiversity of region. Studies will be conducted with the assistance of Aust Quarantine Investigation Service to identify any noxious weeds or pests.
As most areas border suburban development, this will improve the environmental aspect and encourage further involvement from the community to support ‘green’ projects and developments within the Wet Tropics areas of North Qld.
