Happy Green Corps Participants

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience to join a Green Corps team?
NO! You don't need previous experience in environmental work. Show us that you're motivated and keen on hard work and that you're enthusiastic about the environment.
Do I get paid on Green Corps?
Yes you do! As a team member you'll be eligible for the participant allowance which is $291 per week. You'll be paid this amount if you attend for the full 35 hours per week.
How do I get paid?
Green Corps will pay you your Participant Allowance every two weeks. You need to give us your bank details so we can pay you directly into your account.
Do I get superannuation or holiday leave?
No. You're not an employee of Job Futures or the Australian Government while you're participating in Green Corps. Because of this, we do not pay you holiday leave and superannuation.
What if I'm on Youth Allowance?
If you're getting Youth Allowance and you're chosen as a participant on Green Corps, you have to let Centrelink know so they can suspend payment of your Allowance. If you don't inform Centrelink and they overpay you - you'll have to pay the money back and/or pay penalties.
What if I get sick?
You are entitled to a maximum of ten days' sick leave during your six months on Green Corps. If you're away for more than two days in a row, you'll have to get a medical certificate for the whole time you're off sick. Once you've had five sick days (and even if you've supplied a medical certificate for part of those days) you'll have to supply a medical certificate for any additional days that you may be sick. If you take a day off immediately before or after a public holiday you'll have to supply a medical certificate, otherwise you won't get paid for the public holiday.
What do I wear?
You'll be given a Green Corps uniform and work boots. The uniform will keep you safe and your skin protected from sunburn or cold.
Are many girls involved in Green Corps?
Absolutely! Some of our projects even have a majority of girls. Teams are made up of a mix of females and males so no one feels left out.
I have a disability. Can I join up?
Yes. Young people with disabilities are encouraged to apply for Green Corps. We'll work with you and give you the support you need to get through the project. We have worked with hundreds of participants with disabilities, so we're ready to help you get the most out of the programme.
There are no projects listed in my area but I really want to be involved in Green Corps.
Keep an eye out on the web-site or contact your nearest Job Futures member. There are always new projects being developed and you never know when one will come up in your local area.
What if I live outside NSW, ACT, Queensland or the Northern Territory?
Job Futures only runs Green Corps in NSW, ACT, Queensland and the Northern Territory. Other organisations run the programme around Australia. Check out the Federal Government's Green Corps website at www.greencorps.gov.au for contact details.
