Green Corps is great news for employers
“The projects resulted in improved practical skills amongst the trainees, as well as greater levels of confidence and communication skills”
Port Stephens Council.
Green Corps graduates are hard working, team orientated and motivated. They're excited by what they've learnt, the skills they've developed, and what they have to offer you.
A Green Corps project lasts for 26 weeks. In this time, participants work hard in a team to see their project completed. They learn about "how to work". Green Corps participants do hard work including weeding, track construction, collecting seed, propagating plants, tree planting, and fencing. They reach targets, get real things done.
At a recent project at Jigamy Farm on the NSW South Coast, participants:
- Planted 4500 trees and 1000 grasses
- Collected one kilogram of seeds
- Constructed 500m of walking track
- Led local and international visitors on a cultural tour
- Established a traditional Boora Ring for performing Aboriginal Dance troops - a raised semi-circle stage with seating for 80.
- Created a gunya (a traditional bark shelter)
- Monitored water quality
- Completed a survey of freshwater fish
The Green Corps program is a quality pre-apprenticeship program and provides participants the necessary skills to go onto traineeships/apprenticeships and employment. Participants gain work experience through a number of project activities in a range of locations.
A Green Corps graduate has:
Training: All graduates complete a first aid certificate, occupational health and safety training and at least 134 hours of accredited training - usually a minimum certificate 1 in Conservation and Land Management
Leadership skills: Participants are taught to take responsibility for getting aspects of their Green Corps project done.
Discipline: They understand the need to turn up to work, turn up on time, and work hard.
Problem solving skills: There are lots of challenges thrown at participants of a Green Corps project. They learn how to work through these challenges in new and constructive ways.
The capacity to work in a team: Green Corps graduates know how important it is to work as a team to get a job done. They've learnt to compromise and support each other.
People skills: Green Corps graduates have done things like holding community events, asking survey questions, working with schools and engaging with interest groups in their communities.
The ability to work safely and responsibly: Participants learn safe work practices for themselves, the team and the environment. They are responsible for care of their uniform, Personal Protective Equipment and the work team's tools. Each participant becomes aware of the environmental impact of the work they do.
